Consultant Steve Meyer


Consultant Steve Meyer has over 30 years of experience as a writer.  An accomplished grant writer, he has written in excess of 300 successful grants involving FEMA, USDA, Federal and State Government, private foundation and corporate grants.  In the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program alone he has written over $8 million in successful grants for fire and ambulance departments throughout the Midwest.  Due to his proven grant writing ability Consultant Meyer is called upon by more venues for his services all of the time.  Consultant Meyer is a member of the American Grant Writers Association and the Grant Professionals Association.

Consultant Meyer is also a developer of emergency management plans and exercises.  Since 2005 he has developed 20 community Hazard Mitigation Plans and three Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plans.  He has done work for several entities developing plans for a variety of situations including continuity of government and operations, terrorism, mass casualty and mass fatality, airport disaster, hazardous materials, foreign animal disease, animal rescue disaster and many others. 

  • Published Writer: Consultant Meyer has published five titles on the Civil War: War of the Heart (2002—fiction) Dark Days of the Rebellion (1996), Iowa Valor (1994), Iowans Called To Valor (1993), and Discovering Your Civil War Ancestry (1993). He also published So You Want To Self-Publish (1997). His career as a writer began three decades ago with writing technical articles for fire and emergency service related magazines and journals. He has worked as a news correspondent for ten newspapers and as a stringer for the Associated Press. He is a Contributing Editor for Firehouse Magazine and a Feature Article Contributor for: Fire Chief Magazine, Fire Engineering Magazine, and the Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman.
  • Education: Consultant Meyer has attained two college degrees: a B.S. in Fisheries & Wildlife Biology (1979) from Iowa State University with a strong emphasis in Journalism and he graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Cincinnati, with a B.S. in Fire Service Administration in 1991. In 1993 he graduated from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.
  • Work Experience: Meyer has served as Fire Chief of the Garrison Volunteer Fire Department since 1985 and also served as Fire Chief of the Cedar/Mt. Auburn Fire Department in 2006 and 2007. He is a Past President of the Iowa Fire Chief’s Association and Central Iowa Training Association (CITA). In 1998 he was the State of Iowa Firefighter of the Year. He has also served as a field staff instructor for the National Fire Academy and the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau. His special interest is fire service management and administration training.
  • Personal: He makes his home in Garrison, Iowa with his wife of 31 years, Teresa and their two daughters Amy (21) and Emily (18). His hobbies include timber and native prairie management, raising Miniature Hereford Cattle and outdoor related activities.
